Keeping it Real

5 Brothers has been a Key West staple since 1978, when Heriberto Paez and his four brothers opened their neighborhood grocery in a vintage corner store built in 1933. Over the decades, it became more than a place to grab essentials. Locals showed up for Cuban coffee, pressed sandwiches, Key West conversation, and the shop grew into a daily crossroads of Old Town life.

In 1997, the torch passed to the next generation, Heriberto “Pepe” Paez Jr. and Maribel, who kept the rhythm of early mornings, familiar faces, and strong Cuban roots alive. Pepe truly took the reins, guiding 5 Bros from a traditional corner grocery into what it is today; a daily home for coffee, food, and conversation.

Today, as a third generation carries the legacy forward, 5 Bros is still popping with the same locals from around the island. Over the years, it has built a reputation that stretches far beyond the neighborhood. It’s not just locals lining the street for a bite of one of Fran’s specials, but travelers too. They come chasing the rumors of something genuine. The kind of authentic Cuban café that’s worth the extra walk, if you’re daring enough to go looking for the real Cuba in Key West.
